The collapse of the Soviet Union and the coming to power of anti-Western regimes in Iran and Iraq have brought the territories covered in this book back to prominence after decades of relative quiet. During the nineteenth century these territories which are now part of or border on Russia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China were the main theater of the Great Game, in which British and Russian agents competed for influence over the native princes.

This volume provides a detailed study of the astonishing reinvention of the Empire of Japan during the 19th century as it emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation to become a military superpower. As late as the 1850s the country remained technologically and militarily stagnant, but within just 40 years – in what must rank as the most rapid and comprehensive cultural transformation in world history – it had managed not only to absorb and successfully imitate several hundred years of Western technological progress, but had become one of the late Victorian world’s top ten military powers. During the same timeframe it also embraced the concept of colonialism, and with its invasion of China in 1894 and virtual occupation of Korea soon after took its first fateful steps along a road that would lead, with horrible inevitability, to head-on collision with the Allies in World War Two.

The evolution of its army, arms, uniforms and tactics during the 19th century are all covered, from samurai armor to Western uniforms, and from Katana to Krupps. Korea, by contrast, participated only reluctantly in military modernization, and adopted a limited program of reform only under foreign pressure – especially Japanese, but also American, Russian and Chinese – in the closing decades of the century. Such reforms as the country attempted nevertheless proved too little and too late, and were insufficient to prevent Korea becoming first a puppet state and then a colony of its maritime neighbor. The final part of the book comprises a detailed index for the five volumes of the series published thus far.

In the 19th century the eastern Savannah (now divided between the countries of Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Cameroon) was one of the most neglected parts of the African continent, and yet at the same time one of the most culturally sophisticated. During this period warfare among the peoples of the eastern Savannah, and in particular the three most significant native states – the Sokoto Caliphate, the ancient kingdom of Bornu, and the somewhat less ancient state of Bagirmi – was largely dominated by cavalry, and a significant proportion of these mounted troops were armoured. This groundbreaking book covers the period that began with the Sokoto jihad in 1804 and ended with the extinction of the Savannah states by the European colonial powers at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to providing a brief outline history of the three states, it examines in detail the arms, equipment and methods of warfare used by their armoured ‘knights’ and infantry, and includes in addition sections on their horses, artillery, flags, fortifications, and clothing. It is illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs and engravings.

The detailed text provides the dress, arms, organisation, and tactics of the protagonists, and includes sections on the foreign explorers and the forces of the British and German East African colonies. Illustrations include 124 drawings of warriors and soldiers.

This is the second volume in Foundry’s projected series describing the armies of the era of exploration in sub-Saharan Africa. Following a similar format to its predecessor, it covers the area now largely occupied by the countries of Gabon, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, and Malawi.

This was the archetypal ‘Darkest Africa’ of 19th century exploration, and many of its indigenous inhabitants lived at the time in remote regions. Consequently most of what we know about these peoples comes from the fleeting impressions of such European travelers as encountered them – and all too often their experiences were limited to a flight of arrows from an unseen enemy concealed in the forest. This book therefore sets out to put such confrontations into context, and to describe the organization, tactics, costumes and weapons of the protagonists in this unique theater of conflict. Chris Peers’ authoritative text is accompanied by photographs, maps and 120 drawings of warriors, troop types and flags.

British in India 1825-1859: Organisation, Warfare, Dress and Weapons (Британцы в Индии 1825-159: организация, военное дело, одежда и оружие)

  • Страниц: 224
  • Фигур: 199
  • Дата выхода: 2006 г.

Of all the military campaigns fought by the British during the 19th century, no area saw more conflict than the subcontinent of India. Dozens of encounters, both great and small, involved many of its races as either friends or foes of Britain – indeed, it was not unusual for an area to furnish both ally and enemy at the same time! This volume covers the British, Indian and Anglo-Indian troops who fought for The Honourable East India Company and Britain over the varied landscape of what is present day Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, between the years 1826 and 1859.

The vast array of uniforms and dress worn by soldiers serving in India during this period is examined in detail, and extensive information is also provided on regimental Colours. The book’s nine chapters cover the campaign in Bhurtpore (1825–26); the Coorg campaign (1834); the First Afghan War (1839–42); the conquest of Sind (1843); the campaign against Gwalior (1843); the Sikh Wars (1845–46 and 1848–49); actions on the North-West Frontier (1849–58); the Santhal Rebellion (1855–56); and the Indian Mutiny (1857–59).

Each of these chapters includes uniform information specific to the campaign covered, while that on the Indian Mutiny also includes details of Mutineer dress. Many orders of battle and battle-plans are also included. Illustrations comprise 199 drawings of troop types and flags, and 27 other illustrations and maps.

This book should not be looked upon as a political or social history, although an understanding of these aspects would give a clearer insight into why and how Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay became embroiled in the largest war ever fought in South America.

It is, rather, a work covering the military side of the events that took place between 1810–70, with a hint of the political undercurrents that motivated the various wars fought in the region during the same period. Hopefully it will encourage readers to become interested in Latin and Central American military history—a vast field of research largely neglected in both Britain and the United States.

Colonial Armies in Africa 1850-1918 Organisation, Warfare, Dress and Weapons.jpg

  • Автор: Питер Эббот (текст и иллюстрации), Иэн Хит (редактор)
  • Страниц: 224
  • Фигур: 229
  • Дата выхода: 2006 г.

In the second half of the 19th century, European-led columns began to fan out across the African continent from their coastal footholds, smashing whatever forces could be brought against them, no matter how brave or determined the latter were. The process began at different dates in different parts of the continent, but much of the main activity was concentrated into the two decades between 1881 and 1902, subsequently but accurately nicknamed the ‘Scramble for Africa’.

By 1914 the Europeans had overrun the greater part of the continent, and, remarkably, had managed to do so without clashing with each other in the process: conflict between them only occurred after 1914 because what was essentially a European power-struggle was inevitably projected on to the African landscape. The armies responsible for this extraordinary period of expansion have seldom been surveyed as a whole, and never in the organisational detail attempted here.

As well as including an outline of the principal campaigns of the period, military historian Peter Abbott examines in detail the structure, dress and armament of the colonial armies fielded by the Congo Free State, the Belgian Congo, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, and includes in his text an unprecedented amount of order of battle material. Illustrations include 229 drawings of soldiers, 58 other illustrations, and two maps.

This book traces the developments in the structure, armament, and uniforms of the armies maintained by the imperial powers in Asia throughout the colonial period, with illustrative order of battle material wherever possible

The evolutionary development of the armies which maintained the colonial powers’ extraordinary ascendancy in the East for four and a half centuries has seldom been surveyed as a whole, and certainly not in the kind of organizational detail included in this book.

An earlier volume in this series covered Small Wars and Skirmishes 1902–18. The present volume extends coverage of such ‘small wars’ to the interwar years of 1919–39. After a hiatus during the Great War, when resources were diverted elsewhere, the earlier colonial incursions were followed in the 1920s and 1930s by a process of consolidation involving campaigns against emerging resistance movements, many of which owed their strength to religious fanaticism. Major nationalist leaders such as Abd el-Krim in Morocco and Omar al-Mukhtar in Libya emerged from 1920 onwards, and the spark provided by their resistance to foreign control lit the flame of post-1945 independence movements.

The title of this volume, Risings and Rebellions 1919–39, reflects the change in emphasis compared with the earlier colonial campaigns. Indeed, the sheer scale of such wars as the risings against the French and Spanish forces in Morocco and the Italian re-conquest of Libya takes them out of the category of ‘small wars’ altogether.

A book such as this cannot hope to cover all the civil disturbances, emergencies, outright revolts, insurrections, insurgencies, rebellions and campaigns of passive resistance that occurred against the colonial powers over a period of two decades. What it does attempt to do is to illustrate the main types of campaign involved, the organization of forces, the effects of new weaponry, and the tactics that the indigenous peoples used to counter the technology of the colonial invader, particularly by applying their local knowledge of some of the most difficult terrain in the world. In most cases at least one battle or skirmish is described in some detail in order to give a flavour of the significant factors involved. Sketch maps are provided to indicate the main campaigns and illustrations show the uniforms or tribal dress of the combatants.

Small wars and insurgencies did not, of course, end when Imperialism gave way to independence movements. They continued as incursions by more powerful neighboring states once the colonial powers had departed the scene (East Timor, Tibet, Western Sahara) or as civil wars, often arising from ethnic conflicts caused by the artificial boundaries created by the former colonial powers (Angola, Dar Fur, India/Pakistan, Indo-China, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, Zaire). Nor is any end in sight – the lessons of history take a long time to learn, if indeed they are ever learnt.

The present volume includes appendices on weaponry and equipment, mechanized vehicles, communications, and the use of aircraft, armored cars and tanks in suppressing risings and rebellions. Each section of the text and the appendices is intended to be self-contained but concludes with a select bibliography in case readers wish to go back to original sources or to seek more detail on particular campaigns.
