За 1980 г. инфа: The tensions of defeat rose to the surface in April, 1978 when a group of officers, almost all of the Mijerteyn clan, attemptedto overthrow General Siyad Barre. The attempt failed, and the officers were executed in public. It was significant that the political anguish took the form of a return to traditional clan loyalties and vendettas. Some evidence suggests that these feuds, played out in the Ogaden, contributed to the Somali reverses. Whether this is correct or not, the conclusion to be drawn from April, 1978 is that old clan feuds could seriously weaken the Somali army in both peace and war in the future. There are no firm reports yet available on any re-equipment of the Somali forces. Two pointers to their weakened state appeared in late 1978. Ethiopian aircraft struck three areas in the north of Somalia early in November; their attack was not checked, nor was there any retaliation. In October, on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the military coup, a ceremonial parade was held; but the best the air force could produce was six aircraft: four MiG-17s and two MiG-21s. One very recent report claims the new order of battle for the Somali army to be based on three divisions, together with 20 independent regiments. Sixteen new infantry battalions are said to have been raised, increasing the army's strength to over 50,000. Losses in the fighting with Ethiopia are reported to have reduced the total numbers of tanks from 300 to 80, and other armoured fighting vehicles from 350 to 100. Milan anti-tank missiles and 106 mm guns have been supplied, probably via Saudi Arabia, to the Somalis. The air force's casualties are reported to have been 30 aircraft, leaving totals at present of seven MiG-21 and 15 earlier MiG-15 or MiG-17 machines. L. L. M.
