Artillery bands in New Zealand started with the volunteers in the 1860s. They continued until 1964 when the cost of bands led the authorities to consolidate and fore out a number of regimental bands.

This bandsman wears a peaked cap, which is the blue parade version of with red piping and band. Attached to the front of the band is a regimental badge.

The jacket is of the same style as the ceremonial ‘blues’ uniform of the troops but with added embellishments. The collar and cuffs have red facing cloth attached, with gilt piping around the edges and forming a crow’s foot knot on the latter. On the shoulders are gilt cords.

Around his waist this musician wears a RNZA stable belt, the same pattern as the Royal Artillery. ‘Artillery’ trousers are used with shoes.
