Following the war, the Australian Army reorganized with reduced numbers.

A Militia unit was raised to replace the disbanded New Guinea Volunteer Rifles. As the P&NG Volunteer Rifles, it took volunteers from all over the territory, as long as they were Caucasian.

This junior NCO wears standard Australian Army uniform and equipment for the period. His felt hat has a seven-fold drill puggaree and rising sun badge on the left brim.

The shirt and trousers are drill. White tape chevrons are stitched to the rolled shirtsleeves.

Around the waist he carries a whitened webbing belt with polished brass fittings, for parades. The anklets are also parade items, clean and polished.

He carries a SMLE rifle and bayonet.

Below is the parade uniform worn in 1955. The hat is worn with brim down, the shirt is closed at the neck with a black tie and a red lanyard has been added to the right shoulder.

At the bottom of the page is the unit cloth title stitched to the top of the sleeves.
