During the first Balkan War the European powers decided how the ‘spoils’ would be allocated. The Montenegrins, after a long siege, had taken the town of Scutari (Shkodra) but were not allowed to keep it. To stabilise the area and ensure its incorporation into the new Kingdom of Albania, an international force was sent to the city. To replace the seamen first deployed by the Austro-Hungarians, a detachment from the 4th Battalion of the 87th Infantry Regiment were selected. They were supported by a machine-gun element, supply troops, medical detachment, radio communications, a contingent from the 3rd Engineer Battalion, and the regimental orchestra. The total number of troops deploying was 29 officers and 480 men.

The 87th Infanterie Regiment had green facings on their uniforms, with white metal buttons. For their service in this hot region the unit was issued white clothing, cut in the same manner as the standard uniform. The officer at left has a single rank star on his collar tabs. His cap is made from white materials as opposed to the usual black felt and leather, but bears the usual badges.

The soldier at right wears an unusual uniform. His headdress is a tropical helmet with no badges. The jacket the same as the standard dark blue version, with facing collar tabs and roll on the right shoulder strap. On the left chest is a marksmanship device in red. His equipment is standard issue to the infantry and dismounted troops with slanted ammunition pouches providing easier access. Grey trousers are worn, although white are likely to have been issued. He is armed with an 8mm Mannlicher M97 rifle and bayonet.

The unit remained in the area and started its war campaign against the Serbs.
