Corporal, Army, Republic of Liberia, 1948

The USA had always supplied military equipment and expertise to Liberia. During the Second World War American troops garrisoned the area and a substantial quantity of stores was transferred to the local Government. For this reason the Army of Liberia was hardly distinguishable from that of contemporary America.

This junior NCO wears the undress headgear, an American Garrison cap with light blue piping (the American arm of service colour for infantry).

The drill shirt is closed at the neck with a black tie, tucked into the shirt front. On the sleeves are gilt lace chevrons, in the American style, on black backing.

Around the waist is an American webbing ammunition belt, holding rounds for his 0.303in Springfield rifle, again from American stocks. The bayonet scabbard is attached to the left side of the belt.

The drill trousers are tucked into canvas gaiters.
