The Imperial Yeomanry were the mounted volunteers of the Army. The second of two IY units raised in Ireland was the North Irish Horse. They wore a very distinctive uniform of lancer pattern but with a bersaglieri style of plumed hat.
Mess dress, as in most IY units, was worn by both officers and senior NCOs. At left is the officer’s pattern, based on the general pattern adopted by the army prior to the turn of the century. The coat and overalls follow the colours of the full dress, with white distinctions throughout. The waistcoat is also white. Note there is a small loop at the pinnacle of the pointed cuff.
Note the spurs fixed to his Wellington boots.
The Sergeant’s mess dress is much the same. The differences are white shoulder straps, thin white chevrons on the right sleeve and a green waistcoat. Also he is wearing trousers, and no spurs on his boots.
