Cycling was the craze of the late 1800s, and one that had an impression on the military of the time. Volunteer Force units formed sections, and sometimes companies, of cyclists to improve mobility and communications, and provide an integral reconnaissance ability. Not to be left behind many regular units formed small cycling sub-units. Whether this was for the same reason as the volunteers, or more recreational I am unsure. The cyclists had a uniform adapted to their activity, less formal than that worn by standard soldiers. Headdress – Dark blue Torin cap with yellow piping on the edge of the crown and side folding flaps. The Corps grenade badge was worn on the left side to the front of the flap. Jacket – Simple dark blue item with dull buttons. Legwear – Dark blue breeches with the RE’s thick red stripe down the outer seams, tucked into long stockings. The shoes may be a type used specifically for riding. No equipment seems to indicate a recreational activity, but may have been attached to the cycle instead of on the soldier.
