The provinces of French Indochina had a certain amount of autonomy, and the ability to field their own local forces. This soldier is part of such a local force or garde indigene.

His uniform follows the pattern used in this region, being loose and or a light material. The hanging sash at the front is very indicative of Indochina. The fastenings of the jacket are also a regional (Chinese) feature. Note the red putties worn with bare feet. The hat is somewhat unusual being more of a ‘boater’ style with a large brim and coloured band.

He is armed with an outdated 11mm Gras M1874 and bayonet. His leather equipment is from the same era.
