Member, Milizia, Republic of San Marino, 1936

San Marino managed to remain an independent nation in the midst of a resurgent Fascist Italy, but was heavily influenced by its ‘neighbour’. This small nation had an equally small military force or the Miliz.

This member wears a very fashionable uniform of the 1930s. It features a Basque-like beret with no badge. Beneath the stylish jacket is worn a black shirt and necktie, but not fascist in orientation.

His equipment is a pouch on the back supported by the leather crossbelt.

The blue breeches have a thick white stripe down the outer seams. They are tucked into gaiters, worn over ankle boots.

He is armed with a 6.5mm M91 carbine with folding bayonet, originally designed for the mounted arms.

White gloves complete the ceremonial uniform.
