Sepoy, Infantry, Royal Nepalese Army, 1936

This illustration shows a Private of the Royal Nepalese Army, but could be a Gurkha of the contemporary British Indian Army.

The headdress is the felt hat with flat brim, worn at a considerable angle on the head. It has a multi-fold khaki drill puggaree.

His shirt is either khaki drill or a light grey-blue colour. At this time, both colours could be seen in India and it is difficult to tell which was worn in Nepal.

Over the shirt he carries 1908 webbing equipment, with the 1915 modification to the left side ammunition pouches.

Drill shorts are worn with khaki hosetops and ankle puttees.

He carries an Indian manufactured 0.303in Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle. Examples of these were also manufactured locally.

In this uniform units of the RNA deployed to India to assist in repulsing the Imperial Japanese Army, fighting at Kohima.
