Each regiment or squadron of the Imperial Army was identified by the use of a facing colour and metal type. For example, this junior officer of the 6th Infantry Regiment has pink facings on his collar, piping and cuffs, and white metal buttons.

The device on his cuff is a ‘bear's paw’, the distinguishing mark of a Hungarian regiment, in silver lace. His stiff cap is standard for the Army covered with felt. It has an Imperial cockade on the front of the crown and Imperial coloured piping around the base. His jacket is standard for the infantry, with rank shown by the two six-pointed stars on the collar ends.

For summer, in some regions, white trousers were worn to reduce the effects of the heat.
