With the start of the Second World War Iceland was identified as a strategic location. After the fall of Norway, Allied forces moved swiftly to secure the island against potential German aggression. The local authorities prepared for war.

The most obvious features of this Policeman’s attire are the blue steel helmet (Norwegian issue) and gas mask in a blue canvas pouch worn on his chest.

The Icelandic police used a very dark blue cloth for their uniform, almost black. The jacket has internal chest pockets and gilt buttons throughout. Gilt piping surrounds the shoulder straps.

Around the waist is a black leather belt, with pistol holster attached and worn behind the right hip. A utility pouch is worn on the front, below the gas mask.
