The area around the Panama Canal was protected and policed by the US authorities, who raised their own police force in 1904. They were responsible for law enforcement and the security of Canal Zone property. At its height the force consisted of around 400 police officers of all ranks split into two Divisions, Atlantic and Pacific, and between about 25 stations. The Department, as it ended up, was disbanded in 1982 when the 'zone' reverted to Panamanian control.

Their uniform differed from local patterns, having a very American appearance with the Montana peaked hat, style of jacket and breeches, and eagle topped badge; the latter bearing the individual’s number.

The jacket and breeches are khaki drill, and the latter is tucked into leather leggings.
