Despite having the Army Service Corps to call on, many units retained an integral transport element in their organisation. This could be used for support on exercises or for movement in barracks, and so forth, adding to the unit’s flexibility. Members of this specialised sub-unit wore clothing suitable for their mounted task. Headdress – The HLI was the last regular regiment to retain the shako, a high, dark blue felt covered item with Scottish diced band around the base of the crown. Attached to the front top of the crown is a green pompom in a metal mounting. Fixed to each side, and hanging to the front, was a green cord ornament. The peak and chin strap were black leather. The unit badge was attached to the front of the crown. Doublet – Standard Scottish jacket in scarlet with yellow facing cloth on the collar and cuffs. The item is ornamented throughout with white piping and brass buttons. Legwear – Cord breeches tucked into long dark blue serge putties, worn over ankle boots. Equipment – White leather waist belt closed with a brass union buckle. Over the right shoulder is carried a white canvas haversack, holding essential items such as food for the day. Over the left shoulder is a water bottle on a white leather strap.
