There were several rifle companies formed on the island of Fiji that constituted part of the FDF. They were the ??? They appear to have been formed from both Europeans and natives.
This rifleman wears the accepted uniform of the time. The slouch hat has a leather band around the base of the crown and, I believe, the Force badge attached to the turned up left brim. It was too hot for a tunic so a shirt is used as outer wear. This has an attached collar and partial front opening, but no shoulder straps.
Drill breeches or trousers are worn with serge puttees and ankle boots.
He is armed with the outdated 0.303in Long Magazine Lee Enfield rifle and bayonet. The latter is slung from the waist belt to the rear of the left hip. A single ammunition pouch may be carried at the rear of the belt.
The newspaper illustration below is the basis for this plate.
