The Irish Guards were formed, as the fourth element of the Guards, in 1900. It was allocated green for its facings and, in line with the convention of the Guards, wore its buttons arranged in sets of four.
This senior NCO wears the newly introduced 'Brodrick' cap in dark blue with a green band and crown piping. The unit badge was attached to the front of the crown. The Guards retained their Brodrick’s longer than the regular troops who disliked the cap and only wore it into 1906. His three rank chevrons, on red backing, are sewn onto the right sleeve, and the crimson sash also denotes status in the unit.
His uniform is a mix of old and new. The undress jacket was retained by the Guards from the 1850s, as did the Scottish regiments. But the breeches and putties are the new khaki pattern. His ankle boots remain the black version, and not the new brown type for use with khaki uniform.
