The uniform of the European member of the Force could be quite varied. Being isolated from their superiors and needing to compensate for the extreme temperatures, comfort frequently overtook regulation.
This senior NCO wears parade uniform. His felt hat has a dark band, possibly blue, and no chinstrap. It is likely an Army item.
His jacket is white drill with stand collar and brass Force buttons. Red tape chevrons denote his rank.
Plain drill trousers are worn with white leather shoes.
In the field the hat would be worn with khaki drill shirt and shorts. With bearers carrying most items, a minimum amount of equipment would be worn or carried by the member, probably only his rifle.
Below is a transitional uniform worn by the natives. The blue cap and lap-lap have been replaced by khaki versions but in the old style. The stripe of red on the cap band and the two stripes on the lap-lap indicate an NCO.
The cummerbund and white leather belt have been retained from the earlier uniform.
At the bottom of the page are examples of the badges worn by the NGPF.
