French dominion extended into the desert areas of the Middle East and northern Africa, and in both areas camel-mounted troops were used to police the regions.

This junior officer leads a detachment in the Sahara. He is clothed and equipped for riding. The standard pattern sun helmet is worn, but bereft of chinstrap or badges. His jacket is a simple item in darker red material with brass buttons and gilt rank piping on the cuffs. His trousers are voluminous, but cooler in the heat of the desert. Sandals were the preferred footwear.

The majority of his equipment was carried on the camel, as for the cavalry. But he carries a holstered revolver for personal protection, probably a 8mm Lebel M1892. A better choice than the usual sword. Note the cross strap placed to support the weight of the holster.
