The Algerian Rifles had been a part of the French Armee de Afrique for decades. Their uniform was the picturesque zouave dress in light blue with yellow distinctions. The French officers worn the uniform illustrated here, prior to the Great War.

The kepi has a gilt lace chinstrap and piping rank insignia on the red crown. The top is figured in the French manner.

The dolman is the same colour as the natives’ uniform, light blue, but with black braid and lace. Additionally there are gilt shoulder cords attached and rank piping on the cuff.

The trousers are the infantry’s red but with a light blue stripe down the outer seams.

He carries the usual weapon of an officer of the time, a sword.
