The Czech Army was riven with traditions when it was first formed in 1919. There was competition between members of the contingents that fought with the French, Italian and Russian armies, as well as those who fought with the Imperial Austro-Hungarian forces. The Allied forced were recognised in the various uniforms of the Castle Guard who guarded Prague, and the French and Russian influence can be seen in the style and colour of uniforms worn since formation.

However, Austrian traditions were not entirely forgotten, as can be seen in the red breeches of this cavalryman. Whilst the French had their pantalon rouge , the Austrian cavalry vehemently retained their red breeches even in to the Great War. It appears this tradition piece of uniform transferred to the Czechs for their mounted arm.

The jacket is the standard issue item for this time with copious buttons. The yellow distinctions of the cavalry decorate the shoulder straps and collar ends. Hanging from the left shoulder button is a marksmanship cord, similar to that used during Imperial days and by other East European armies.

The undress side cap is a simple item with Czech lion badge fixed to the left front. Perhaps for walking out he carries a sword and gloves.
