The RNZIR was formed in 1947 as the NZ Infantry Regiment with a single battalion. The 1st Battalion, redesignated from the 20thBattalion NZEF, was the regular component.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s New Zealand and Australia contributed forces to the protection of Malaya and Singapore under the ANZUK treaty. This soldier is on parade in Singapore as part of the NZ contingent.

He wears the serge cap adopted by the Army with regimental badge attached to the front. The cap is reminiscent of a similar item adopted by the Canadians in the 1950s, with folding side panels.

His uniform is standard issue jungle green shirt and shorts, with trousers being worn in the cooler months or for field activities. Khaki hosetops are worn with a unit flash under the turnover. The short serge puttees have a whitened securing strap, and are worn over ankle boots (ABs).

His rank is shown by the metal crown attached to a leather wristlet worn on the right wrist. His status is confirmed by the crimson sash worn over the right shoulder by infantry senior NCOs and warrant officers, on special occasions such as parades.

His weapon is a 7.62mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR) L1A1 and bayonet, of Australian manufacture.
