The infantry component of the FDF was a territorial battalion of natives officered by Europeans. The parade uniform changed during the 1930s from drill to the white and scarlet shown here.

The officer at left wears a standard ceremonial uniform for the tropics. His helmet is decorated with a multi-fold puggaree and red hackle. The jacket is simple with the only embellishments being collar and rank badges.

The native soldier at right is a member of the regimental brass band. He wears a ceremonial uniform of scarlet jacket with white sulu. No headdress is worn due to the natives’ haircuts, and no boots are worn (usually sandals). The jacket has simple chest pockets.

His band membership is shown solely by the aiguillette worn around the right shoulder and across the chest.
