For social occasions the Volunteers worn mess dress, which could be purchased in winter and summer versions.

This Officer wears an older pattern undress cap with black lace band and top button. There is a strip of gilt metal on the patent leather peak.

His drill jacket is the older style of mess jacket, with high collar and cutaway front. It is very plain with the only addition being the rank badges to the shoulder straps.

Under the jacket he wears an evening shirt with black bowtie.

Around the waist is a red cummerbund.

His trousers are the standard infantry pattern.

The winter mess dress is shown below. It consists of a new pattern scarlet jacket with rolled collar and white facings. Under it is worn a white waistcoat closed with four Corps buttons. The new undress cap is also shown with gilt piping on the edges of the crown and flaps.
